The Panties

Latest, Ramblings

Alayna, the dog and I went for a lovely walk this afternoon since it warmed up to the balmy temperature of 29.

We were trotting along, enjoying the positively tropical air when we found THIS lying on the side of the road.

Why yes, that is a pair of adult women’s panties chilling out on my neighbor’s front lawn. I don’t know what types of treasures you typically find while out for a stroll in your own lovely neighborhoods, but we don’t often find ladies’ unmentionables. So I have to wonder what series of events led to this perfectly good pair of panties being haphazardly abandoned out in this chilly weather. read more

The #MentalLoad Empowers Women

Latest, Parenting, Uncategorized

There’s been a lengthy cartoon floating around the internets of late (read it here), and, briefly summarized, it talks about how women carry the mental burden of most tasks around the home and how terrible this is and how men do nothing and they’re worthless sloths who contribute to the family no more than an additional child. The mental load is a terrible thing to bear and it is women alone who must carry it!!!

First, I would venture to say that men have their own mental load. You’re generally not going to see me out mowing the lawn, changing the oil, talking to mechanics, monitoring our investments, etc. Not that women can’t do these things (because, #empowered, obviously), but because gender roles typically dictate that men do them. I’m sure there are plenty of women who take care of those tasks in their homes, but I’m speaking in generalities here. When we started our life together, my husband naturally took on these roles the same way I naturally took on mine.
Not to mention that, at least my case, my husband has a whole other world of his own mental load at work. He has projects to complete, bosses to impress, and customers to keep happy. All this, coupled with the pressure of financially providing for his family single-handedly, is no small thing. read more

Things I Love About Winter (An Exercise for My Mental Health)

Latest, Ramblings

Not gonna lie, winter is my least favorite season. I mean, there is really just so much to hate. Frigid temps, sky-high heating bills, figuring out how to keep kids warm in their carseats without coats, scraping snow and ice off my car, tracking snow into the house, the way the inside of your nose freezes a little when it’s below zero…I could go on.

Nevertheless. I thought perhaps it would be good for my mental health if I tried to look on the bright side. Or, dwell on the beauty of life, said the great emperor Aurelius.** read more

How to Keep Your Finances Organized (Without Even Trying)

Latest, Saving Money

I’ve struggled a lot to try to find an easy, effective way to organize our money. I’ve tried online budgeting tools, using excel, cash, you name it. Every system has failed me. Until now! I think I’ve finally landed on a system that seems to work pretty well so far, so I wanted to share it here with you.

I’ve found that the key to keeping our finances organized and being intentional with our money is having multiple bank accounts. When I decided to get our finances in order, I opened eight separate accounts and labeled them as follows: read more

Product Review: Munchkin Nursery Projector & Sound Machine

Latest, Product Reviews

White noise is my secret weapon as a mother. It shuts those babies UP and puts them right to sleep. I don’t know what it is, but it works. So naturally, instead of tuning the radio (who has one of those anymore?) to static (no really, we actually did this with our oldest daughter), we decided to get a sound machine for baby #2. After considering all of our (many) options, we decided to go with the Munchkin Nursery Projector and Sound System.

This sound machine has tons of features that I love: read more

That Time I Misplaced My Baby

Latest, Parenting

You guys. I get stressed. And when I get stressed I lose my mind.

Yesterday we had kind of a crazy day. We were out late Saturday night, then we got up early and made it to Sunday School (a Christmas miracle!), followed by the service. We then decided to drag our two children to the furniture store “just to look around” at sectionals. (We totally bought one. By accident. Oops.) We only meant for stay for 20 minutes or so, so we skipped lunch. Lo and behold, we did not return home until nearly 3 PM to feed our poor babies. Then we had to immediately prepare for some guests we had coming for dinner. Said guests had agreed to sign our wills for us as well as help us move some heavy furniture around in the basement, since I am weak and incapable of helping my husband do such things. read more

Couponing in Real Life – This Week’s Grocery Haul

Latest, Saving Money

You can really go all-out with couponing. If you want free groceries, you can probably buy alllll the newspapers and spend 27 hours couponing and get free groceries. But in reality, ain’t nobody got time for that. I woke up the other day and decided to go grocery shopping, and then spent an hour or two of the morning getting my coupons together and I wound up saving about 33%, according to my Kroger receipt. And that’s before any rebates through Ibotta. I also feel like I was able to buy better quality stuff than what I normally buy (more name brands, etc.), for less money. So that’s an additional value that’s not reflected in the actual dollar amount that I saved. read more

Cuisinart Electric Pressure Cooker (Do You Really Need That Instant Pot?)

Latest, Product Reviews

This article contains some affiliate links, which means I make a small commission from products purchased through these links.

The Instant Pot thing is all the rage. You’d think pressure cooking was the greatest new invention since travel to outer space. Take a chill pill, people, my grandma had a pressure cooker.

I did not buy into the Instant Pot craze. I have, instead, invested in a slightly less pretty, less fancy, but still perfectly more than adequate for my purposes, Cuisinart Electric Pressure Cooker. Let me tell you about its simple features. read more

Parenting two children is NUTS. I am outnumbered during the day while my husband is at work. Someone always needs me! As soon as I get one baby to the sleep the other wakes up. I have no time. Thusly, I have to trade sleep time for blog post writing time, but it’s all good.

I was thinking about the math of having a second child*. It should be no big deal right?? The first kid was easy, what’s one more? But then you have a second child, and you have TWO HUNDRED PERCENT MORE CHILDREN THAN YOU USED TO HAVE. It’s ridiculous. Don’t have kids, people. Okay, have one if you really feel obligated to continue the human race and whatnot but for the love of all that is your sanity do not, I repeat, DO NOT have anymore!!*** read more

How To Deal When You #ParentingFail

Latest, Parenting

Parenting is tough and we all have our fair share of screw-ups. Normally I would start with a funny story about how my child nearly died when I turned my back for like a sec, but I won’t do that because I’m pretty sure CPS will be knocking on my door if I go and blab about the worst of my parenting stories. Ha! Insert nervous laughter.

Anyway, I had an incident today with Little Bit #1 that scared the pants off me and my post-childbirth pelvic muscles may or may not have failed me. If you know what I mean. But she’s fine and that’s all that matters. read more
